Still Here…
Life has been incredibly trying and busy since my last post. However, I am still finding time to game. Shifting gears a bit I put the Mothership campaign on hold and started a new campaign of Free League’s Twilight: 2000 which has been really awesome. We are about five sessions in and I think we’re all really invested in the story that is emerging. While I still consider myself an O/NSR guy I am really taken with Free League’s Year Zero Engine. I think an argument can be made that Forbidden Lands is somewhat OSR adjacent in that it can support a similar play style.
I certainly find that with T:2K as well. It has great tools for creating an emergent story centered around a huge hexcrawl. The prefab encounters are quite fun, but I find myself using prep time to generate unique encounters and scenarios with the tools in the Referee’s Guide. Twenty minutes of dice rolling, and drawing from a standard card deck, has yielded a scenario that has now stretched into three sessions at least.
Also the art really moves me…
I was so impressed with YZE that I’ve gone back and examined Alien RPG and while that uses a different branch of the YZE (the older dice pool vs T:2K’s dice step) and has more of a narrative/story emphasis I still think it will nicely support my preferred style with little house ruling. I think Gasp I might even start using it to run my Mothership game when return to that. I was already using a variation of the attack table for my xeno/aliens anyway so coming up with a conversion technique shouldn’t be too tough…
If I ever I figure that out I’ll share it here. In the meantime I’m running a short cinematic Alien scenario Thursday night which I’m really looking forward to. It really dials up the tension between the PCs and I think that’s what will make it a fun and dynamic experience.
In the meantime, play a game with your friends!
