Dangerously Untested: DCC Inspired House-rules for The Black Hack

So when I finally got the nerve to start GMing a few years ago the game I decided to use was The Black Hack 2e by David Black. It's super simple yet loaded with awesome vibes and innovative mechanics like the usage die that just makes it a pleasure to run. Using it significantly reduced the new GM jitters I had. The adventure I chose to run was Doom of the Savage Kings by Harley Stroh and written for Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game. Which for good reason is a stone cold classic adventure. I ran it over two or three sessions with a group comprised mostly of neighbors I had cajoled into playing. It was a blast and I think I had hit on really great combination. DCC adventures are really easy to run with TBH. The Black Hack vibes meshed well with DCC's slightly over the top styles and it all fits quite well.

However, in the land of sweet vibes DCC reigns supreme and I felt there was some more I wanted to drag over into TBH. So I did the thing that all new GMs do with games they barely understand: I starting fiddling and hacking it to bits. What came out is a collection of modifications, additions, and other house rules I smashed together. I added 0-Level character creation and funnel stuff, a rudimentary luck mechanic, and additional classes and class features to try to capture more of the DCC feel.

The TBH/DCC game never went much beyond that first adventure. I discovered Mothership and being a much bigger sci-fi nerd than a fantasy nerd I subjected my neighbors to that instead. As a result I never actually got these to the table to see if they work or are completely broken. Since my current campaigns are running in a much different direction with Free League's Twilight: 2000 and Blade Runner the RPG I don't know I'll ever really get around to play testing them or using them. However, this morning I was poking around my hard drive and found them where I left them over two years ago. So I figured what the heck, I might as well release them into the world, maybe someone will find them interesting. I'm sure others have done similar things and probably better, but here are the PDFs if you care to peruse them.

I'm will never try to sell anything here and you will still need a copy of The Black Hack 2e to make sense of this.

Finally, all hail the mighty minds of David Black and Joseph Goodman from which I have shamelessly feasted upon and regurgitated these delicious vibes and ideas.
